Maryland Hunger Solutions Announces Additional Funding for Baltimore Bucks Incentive Project

Baltimore, Md. – November 23, 2013 – Baltimore residents and employees of the Waverly Farmers Market joined Maryland Hunger Solutions and the Baltimore Office of Sustainability to announce the release of $6,000 in additional funding to the Baltimore Bucks Incentive Project from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.
This grant will provide Food Supplement Program (FSP) and Women, Infant and Children (WIC) beneficiaries with up to $10 extra dollars each week to spend at farmers markets. The additional dollars provided by this grant will help low-income Baltimore residents access fresh, healthy and affordable foods at farmers markets.
“The 32nd Street Waverly Farmers Market began to operate a wireless machine to accept EBT customers’ Independence cards, thanks to grant money procured by Maryland Hunger Solutions,” said market manager Marc Rey. “The incentive dollars have helped customers in financial need buy more nutritious local fruits and vegetables, allowing their families to eat well.”
This grant comes at a time when too many Maryland families are struggling to keep food on the table. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were cut on November 1 – a cut that amounts to $82 million over the next year and that will affect 800,000 low-income Marylanders.
"Given the level of food insecurity that continues to persist in this state, the extra funding for the Bonus Bucks program will help families get the healthy food they need during this holiday season," said Michael J. Wilson, director of Maryland Hunger Solutions. "The extra funding will help, but it also underscores the need for Congress to ensure that further cuts to SNAP don’t happen. People are struggling, and programs like SNAP are helping them put food on the table.”
