Maryland is one of the wealthiest states in the country, but hunger runs deep in our state. It affects people just like you and me in every county across the state: neighbors, working families, and individuals young and old. Many children go without meals. Adults struggling with low wages wonder if they have enough food to last the week. Seniors must choose between paying for food or for medicine.
With our Paper Apple Campaign, were gathering paper apples from people in communities across the state to draw attention to hunger and to build a foundation for a hunger-free Maryland.
Why participate?
These are challenging times for many Marylanders. One in eight Marylanders struggles with hunger. Nearly 20 percent of households with children say they were unable to afford enough food. But the federal nutrition programs the Food Supplement Program, school meals, and WIC are there to help low-income Marylanders get the food they need.
There is unprecedented need in our state and across the country and the federal nutrition programs are more important than ever. Still, there are many who would cut these vital programs which are making a real difference for struggling Marylanders.
By participating in the Paper Apple Campaign, you can tell our elected officials that protecting and investing in nutrition programs is essential to creating a hunger-free Maryland.
How to Participate
You can participate in four easy steps:
1. Download this paper apple (pdf) and this instruction sheet (pdf).
2. Write or draw, on the paper apple, your ideas on how we can achieve a hunger-free Maryland.
3. Write your first name and county on the front of the apple.
4. Return it to: Maryland Hunger Solutions at 400 E. Pratt Street, Suite 606, Baltimore, MD 21202
Sample messages you can use:
- Provide more kids with school breakfast so they start the day ready to learn.
- Help families get the food stamp benefits they need to put food on the table.
- Provide free meals to children during the summer.
- Ensure that all babies get proper nutrition.
How will we use your apples?
Once collected, the apples will be used to form a map of Maryland that will be displayed in locations across the state. This powerful tool will demonstrate the widespread support for protecting policies and programs that help our most vulnerable Marylanders.
