BALTIMORE, November 18, 2022 — Maryland Hunger Solutions congratulates Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Steny Hoyer on their respective historic tenures as Speaker of the House and House Majority Leader. We celebrate their unwavering commitment to ending hunger across Maryland, and nationally.
A beloved daughter of Baltimore, Speaker Pelosi’s roots run deep throughout our state. Throughout her tenure as Speaker, Pelosi has been a fierce champion of federal nutrition programs. She has been an avid champion of anti-hunger initiatives across the state, including being an early supporter of Maryland’s “Hear the Crunch,” advocating for healthy school meals. She protected and strengthened the structural integrity of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), school meals, and the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), which allowed them to respond timely and effectively when need increased during COVID-19. She built on that solid foundation by shepherding landmark legislation to further bolster the programs’ positive impacts. As a result, millions of struggling households all across the country were able to access the nutrition they needed. If not for these interventions, the spikes in hunger during the pandemic would have been far worse.
House Majority Leader Hoyer represents Maryland’s Fifth Congressional District and is the first Marylander to serve in that role in the state’s history. He has amplified the voices of Marylanders, bringing awareness to the state of hunger in Maryland nationally. His commitment to supporting individuals and families in Maryland has been critical to addressing hunger and ensuring all Maryland residents have access to the nutrition they need. Hoyer was also instrumental in passing critical legislation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the Cares Act, providing much needed relief to Maryland residents.
Maryland Hunger Solutions and the anti-hunger community across the state are indebted to Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer for their leadership, service, and perseverance in the fight against hunger.
