Maryland Hunger Solutions Applauds Launch of Hunger-Free Campus Grant Program Statement attributable to Michael J. Wilson, Director, Maryland Hunger Solutions
BALTIMORE — July 28, 2022 Maryland Hunger Solutions applauds the Maryland Higher Education Commission for launching the 2022 Hunger-Free Campus Grant Program. In 2021, Maryland Hunger Solutions led the effort to pass the hunger-free campus grant program legislation, which created a state-funded matching grant program for state colleges and universities to strengthen anti-hunger work on campus. The grant program will:
- Leverage more sustainable solutions to address food insecurity on campus.
- Raise awareness of services currently offered on campus that address basic food needs.
- Build strategic partnerships at the local, state, and national levels to address food insecurity on college campuses.
This grant is a vital step in addressing campus hunger in Maryland. As college students pursue their degrees, they should not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. National studies show that 38% of students enrolled at two-year colleges and 29% at four-year colleges have experienced food insecurity.
Maryland Hunger Solutions continues to lead efforts to address campus food insecurity through our Hunger-Free Campus Network, which works with colleges and universities to address food insecurity on campus. Through the grant program and network, we will continue working to ensure students do not suffer the consequences of hunger while pursuing higher education
